Acne

Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. Acne can occur at any age but most people who have acne are teenagers and young adults, and most will have a family history of the condition. The exact cause of acne is unknown but widespread “misinformation” often inhibits early treatment and can lead to scarring.  People who have acne usually have very oily skin, blackheads, whiteheads and/or pimples and sometimes deep, painful cysts all of which can lead to scars if not treated.

Misconceptions about acne:

  • Acne is not caused by “dirt” so washing will not prevent or cure the condition
  • Steam does not “open the pores” and can worsen the condition
  • Acne is not caused by an improper diet – but acne is definitely treatable

Treatments:

There are many effective treatments for acne but no one treatment is right for everyone. Most of the treatments are very effective and safe. Some treatments can yield almost magical results, and will even shrink some scars (when patients are compliant!).
